Diani has good restaurants, but the best food is not always attached to the best beach view. Leonardo’s is my favorite restaurant on the strip: wood-fired Italian that locals and long-stay visitors actually go back to. Ali Barbour’s Cave is the special-occasion dinner. Nomad is my pick for a proper meal on the sand, Salty Squid is the easiest beach lunch, and Kokkos is where I send people for breakfast.
For most trips, I would book one special dinner, one seafood lunch, one Italian night, and several casual meals close to your hotel. Do not make every reservation on the beach. Some of Diani’s best cooking sits just off Diani Beach Road, where the kitchen has to be the point.

My Diani restaurant advice
- Book the one special dinner first. Ali Barbour’s Cave fills in December, January, Easter, and Kenyan holiday weekends. Call or email the restaurant directly. For Leonardo’s, Nomad, and Salty Squid, a same-week reservation is usually enough except on peak Saturday nights.
- Do not choose every meal for the view. Have one beach dinner or a long Salty Squid lunch, then eat where the kitchen is the reason to go. Leonardo’s, Kokkos, Shashin-ka, Sir William’s, and African Pot do not need an ocean table to be memorable.
- Lunch is underrated. Beach restaurants have the same view at lunch, service is calmer, and you are not competing with every sunset booking on the strip. Save one dinner for something inland or special.
- Whole fish and lobster are often priced by weight or “market price.” Ask the price, confirm the size, and agree the total before it goes to the kitchen. This is normal on the coast, not a trick, but it only works if you ask.
- Tipping is appreciated, not compulsory. Round up at casual places, or leave about 5% to 10% for good sit-down service. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill. Cards and M-Pesa work at most midrange restaurants. Carry Kenyan shillings for beach bars, smaller spots, and tuk-tuks.
- Reserve through an official channel. Use the restaurant website, phone, or WhatsApp.
- Arrange the ride home. A tuk-tuk or hotel driver is easy for most Diani Beach Road addresses. After a late dinner, do not assume you will find a ride on the road. Pre-book if you are going south toward Galu or staying in a villa set back from the strip.
- Dress is relaxed except at the Cave. Ali Barbour’s is smart-casual (no beachwear, and it is not wheelchair accessible). Everywhere else, shorts and a shirt are fine. Bring a light layer only if you run cold in air-con. The beach tables stay warm.

Ukunda side: Better value and more local. Tribearth, Shashin-ka, Apero, and Sir William’s are worth the short tuk-tuk if you want a meal that is not priced like a beach club.
South toward Galu: Fewer independent restaurants. Plan hotel dining, a booked table at a resort restaurant, or a ride back to the central strip. Mwaepe is the simple fisherman-grill option if you want grilled fish without a scene.

It works for couples, families, and a night when you are tired of grilled fish.

Eat here once for the setting: candlelight in a coral cave, stars overhead on a clear night, and a seafood-led menu. Lobster and the platter are the usual orders. Steaks and other mains exist if someone does not eat fish. It is dinner only, smart-casual, and not accessible if stairs are a problem. Reserve directly. Service can be slow. Go on a clear night, and do not make this your only dinner in Diani.

- Indulge at Nomad: The serious tasting-menu night at The Sands / Nomad, with produce from their farm. Book ahead. This is not the beach-bar menu.
- Sails at Almanara: Open-air seafood on the southern beach, under the canvas sails. Better as a booked lunch or sundowner dinner than as a walk-in. Confirm outside-guest reservations with the hotel.
- Kinondo Kwetu: Worth staying in for if you are already south. The ride back to the main restaurant strip at night is the alternative.
